Texcoco de Mora is a city located in the State of Mexico, situated approximately 25 km northeast of Mexico City. It serves as the municipal seat of the municipality of Texcoco.
During the pre-Hispanic era, the site was a major Aztec city positioned on the shores of Lake Texcoco. Following the Spanish Conquest, it was initially considered the second most important city after Mexico City before gradually becoming more rural in character. During the colonial and post-independence periods, much of Lake Texcoco was drained, resulting in the city no longer being on the shore and a significant portion of the municipality resting on lakebed.
The area is notable for numerous Aztec archaeological finds. One such discovery includes the 125-tonne stone statue of Chalchiuhtlicue, which was found near San Miguel Coatlinchán and is currently housed in the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City.
