Tepotzotlán is a city and municipality located in the Mexican state of Mexico. It is situated approximately 40 km (25 mi) northwest of Mexico City, accessible via a 45-minute drive along the Mexico City–Querétaro road at marker number 41.
Historically, the area served as the center of a dominion during Aztec times that maintained significant independence through an alliance with the Aztec Triple Alliance. Under subsequent Spanish rule, it was part of a "Republic of the indigenous," which granted the region a degree of autonomy. During the colonial period, the town became a prominent educational hub when the Jesuits established the College of San Francisco Javier in 1580.
The college complex functioned as an educational center until 1914. It currently houses the Museo del Virreinato, which contains one of the largest collections of art and other objects from the viceregal period.
