Tepetlaoxtoc de Hidalgo is a town and the seat of the municipality of Tepetlaoxtoc, located in the State of Mexico. Situated approximately 100 km northeast of Mexico City, the name "Tepetlaoxtoc" originates from the Náhuatl language and translates to "limestone caves." The term is frequently used interchangeably to refer to the town, the municipality, and the nearby archaeological site.
The suffix "de Hidalgo" was appended to the town's name as a tribute to Miguel Hidalgo, the figure who initiated the Mexican War of Independence. The area is notable for housing the archeological ruins of Tepetlaoxtoc, which are located within the municipality.
