San Mateo Atenco is a municipality located in the central part of the State of México in Mexico. It serves as one of 125 municipalities within the state, with the town of San Mateo Atenco serving as its municipal seat.
The municipality is situated west of the Federal District and lies near the municipality of Metepec. It forms part of the Toluca urban area, bordering the city to the east. The name Atenco originates from the Nahuatl language and translates to "In the water’s edge," derived from the words atl (water), tentli (edge), and co (in).
