Jiquipilco Municipality is a municipality located in the State of Mexico, Mexico. It is situated approximately 40 km north of Toluca, the state capital, along the transversal volcanic axis that crosses the country. The area is characterized by its location within a region surrounded by lakes and volcanoes known as "Anahuac."
The municipality lies on the southern and western slopes of Cerro La Catedral. This specific geographic area is notable for having a concentration of speakers of the Otomi language. The name Jiquipilco is derived from a corruption of the Nahuatl word "Xiquipilco," which translates to "in the saddlebags."
