Ixtapan de la Sal is a town and municipality situated in the State of Mexico. It is located approximately 60 kilometers south of Toluca, the state's capital, and 120 kilometers south of Mexico City along Federal Road 55.
The name Ixtapan originates from Nahuatl, with two primary theories regarding its etymology. The first theory suggests it is derived from "iztal," meaning salt, and "pan," meaning over or in. An alternative theory proposes the name comes from "itzac" (white), "atl" (water), and "pan" (over or in), which translates to "in white waters." The suffix "de la Sal" is Spanish for "of salt."
