Calimaya is a town and municipality situated just south of Toluca, the capital of the State of Mexico in central Mexico. The settlement's origins date back approximately to 800 BCE, coinciding with the existence of the city of Teotenango.
Throughout the colonial period, Calimaya remained an important town as part of the extensive lands held by a family known as the Counts of Calimaya. The municipality is notable for housing one of the oldest examples of an open chapel in the State of Mexico.
While the area remains primarily agricultural today, it has experienced rapid construction of housing divisions. This development is currently transitioning parts of the municipality from a rural landscape to a suburban environment.
