Amecameca is a municipality situated in the eastern panhandle of Mexico State. Geographically, it is positioned between Mexico City and the Sierra Nevada mountain range, specifically near the Iztaccíhuatl and Popocatépetl volcanoes.
The municipality is located along federal highway 115, which serves as a primary route leading toward Cuautla. This stretch of road is commonly referred to as the Volcano Route.
