Puerto Vallarta is a Mexican resort city situated on the Bahía de Banderas along the Pacific coast of the state of Jalisco. It serves as the government seat of the municipality of Puerto Vallarta, which encompasses the city itself and various population centers extending from Boca de Tomatlán to the Nayarit border. The city is located at 20°40′N 105°16′W.
The municipality covers an area of 681 square kilometres (262.9 sq mi) and borders the state of Nayarit to the north, as well as the municipalities of Mascota, San Sebastián del Oeste, Talpa de Allende, and Cabo Corrientes. Puerto Vallarta is recognized as the second largest urban agglomeration in the state of Jalisco, following the Guadalajara metropolitan area.
