Huasca de Ocampo is a town and municipality located in the state of Hidalgo in central Mexico. It is situated within the Pachuca Mountains, approximately 34 km from Pachuca and 16 km from Real del Monte. While the town sits within the mountain range, a significant portion of its municipal land extends into a valley to the east.
The region's economic history began with the establishment of some of Mexico's first haciendas, followed by mining haciendas constructed by Pedro Romero de Terreros during the 18th century. By the mid-20th century, these haciendas were largely dismantled and converted into communal farm lands known as ejidos, with some areas submerged under lakes created by dams. Agriculture remains a primary economic activity for the area.
In recent years, Huasca de Ocampo has been promoted as a tourism destination, particularly for weekend travelers from Mexico City. Notable attractions in the region include canyons, waterfalls, traditional houses, and preserved old hacienda facilities.
