San Luis Acatlán is a city and the seat of the municipality of San Luis Acatlán located in the Mexican state of Guerrero. Situated within the Costa Chica region, the city is positioned approximately 158 km from Acapulco.
The name "Acatlán" originates from a locality in the modern state of Puebla and derives from the Nahuatl word for "among the reeds." The settlement was established around 1750 by indigenous shepherds from Puebla who arrived between two rivers. The prefix "San Luis" refers to the name given to the area in 1522 when soldiers under Pedro de Alvarado arrived on the feast day of that saint.
