Acámbaro is a city and municipality located in the southeastern corner of the Mexican state of Guanajuato. Situated on the banks of the Lerma River, it holds the distinction of being the oldest of the 46 municipalities within the state. The municipality covers an area of 877.8 km2 and includes several small outlying communities, with Iramuco and Parácuaro identified as the largest.
The settlement originated as a Purépecha site before being invaded by the Spanish and their Otomi allies in 1526. In modern times, Acámbaro is recognized as a significant railway junction and local transport hub. It is also noted for being the origin of the nationally famous Acámbaro bread.
According to the 2005 census, the population of the municipality was 101,762, while the city proper recorded a population of 55,082.
