Magdalena Contreras

Mexico

La Magdalena Contreras is a borough located in Mexico City. Situated at an elevation of 2,365 meters (7,759 feet) above sea level, it had a population of 239,086 inhabitants as of the 2010 census. The area is the third-least populous borough within the city and takes its name from two historically significant communities: La Magdalena Atlitic and Colonia Contreras.

The geography of the borough is characterized by a mix of urban and natural landscapes. While the northern end is urbanized, the remainder of the territory consists of mountains and ravines designated as a conservation zone. Due to the pressures of urban sprawl on these protected areas, the local government has begun promoting ecotourism to help preserve the region's forests and natural resources.
