Coyoacán is a borough located in Mexico City. Originally a pre-Hispanic village situated on the southern shore of Lake Texcoco, the area was dominated by the Tepanec people before being named by the Aztecs. The name originates from the Nahuatl word "Coyōhuahcān," which translates to "place of those who own coyotes."
The location served as a significant site during the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. Following an alliance between the Tepanec and the Spanish, the area was utilized as a headquarters by Spanish forces. It subsequently became the first capital of New Spain between 1521 and 1523. Today, the former village serves as the borough's historic center.
