Ziye (子夜), translated into English as Midnight, is a realist novel published in 1933 by the Chinese author Mao Dun. The work provides a depiction of life in contemporary Shanghai during that period.
The narrative explores the wealth and modernity of Shanghai as it was influenced by capitalism and foreign colonialism. A central theme of the novel involves the tension between these modern developments and traditional values, specifically focusing on how Western modernity frightens the protagonist's father, who is a member of the Chinese landed gentry from the countryside.
