Sadr City

Iraq

Sadr City is a suburb district located in Baghdad, Iraq. Originally constructed in 1959 by Prime Minister Abdul Karim Qassim, the area was initially known as Al-Rafidain District before being renamed Al-Thawra and later Saddam City.

Following the US-led invasion of Iraq and the removal of Saddam Hussein from power, the district was unofficially renamed Sadr City. The name honors Ayatollah Mohammed al-Sadr.
