Hillah, also spelled Hilla, is a city located in central Iraq. It serves as the capital of Babylon Province and is situated approximately 100 km (62 mi) south of Baghdad. The city sits on the Hilla branch of the Euphrates River, which flows through the middle of the town.
The region surrounding Hillah is predominantly agricultural and is extensively irrigated by the Hilla canal to produce various crops, fruits, and textiles. The landscape is characterized by date palm trees and other arid vegetation, which help mitigate the effects of desert winds and dust. As of 2018, the city's population was estimated to be about 455,700.
