Umm Qasr is a port city located in southern Iraq. It is situated on the canalised Khawr az-Zubayr, which serves as part of the Khawr Abd Allah estuary leading into the Persian Gulf.
The city is geographically separated from the border of Kuwait by a small inlet. Historically, a bridge across the waterway provided a link between the port and Kuwait before the 1991 Persian Gulf War.
