Ramadi is a city located in central Iraq, situated approximately 110 kilometers west of Baghdad and 50 kilometers west of Fallujah. It serves as the capital and largest city of Al Anbar Governorate, a region that shares international borders with Syria, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. The city is positioned along the Euphrates River, which bisects the governorate.
Founded in 1879 during the later period of Ottoman Iraq, Ramadi is situated within the Sunni Triangle of western Iraq. As of 2018, the city had a population of about 223,500 residents, primarily consisting of Sunni Arabs from the Dulaim tribal confederation. It is frequently cited as the most common proposal for the capital of a potential Sunni federal region in western Iraq.
