Yo Creek

Belize

Yo Creek is a small village located in the Orange Walk District of Belize. The name of the settlement is derived from a combination of the Yucatec Maya word "yo," meaning "top," and the English word "creek."

The community consists primarily of people of Yucatec Maya descent who are proficient in both Spanish and English, though elders in the village still speak their native Maya language. The village is recognized for its cultural programs dedicated to preserving Yucatec Maya traditions.

Yo Creek is also notable for its Poktapok Maya ball game team, Ek' Balam, which translates to "Black Jaguars" in the Yucatec Maya language. The team gained recognition by winning the championship at the El Mundo Maya mundial de PoktaPok in 2017.
