Belize City is the largest city in Belize, located in the Belize District region. Situated at the mouth of the Haulover Creek, a distributary of the Belize River, it serves as the nation's principal port and its primary financial and industrial hub.
The city served as the capital of former British Honduras until 1970, when the government relocated to Belmopan. According to the 2022 census, the population of Belize City is 63,999 people. The urban area is located near the coast of the Caribbean Sea, where the Belize River empties into the ocean approximately eight kilometres away.
A significant historical event occurred in October 1961 when Hurricane Hattie swept ashore and almost entirely destroyed the city. Despite this destruction, it remains a central hub for the country's commerce and infrastructure.
