Getting Around Kalulushi

Kalulushi is a small mining town in Zambia's Copperbelt Province, sitting close to Kitwe on the M18 road. It grew up as a planned company town for the copper and cobalt mines, and its layout still reflects that compact, purpose-built origin. For a visitor, that means getting around is mostly a matter of short trips within town and straightforward connections out to the larger Copperbelt cities.

How Visitors Move Around Town

There is no metro, tram or suburban rail network serving Kalulushi itself, so you should not expect to navigate the town by train. Day-to-day movement is by road: on foot for short hops, and by minibus or taxi for anything longer or when carrying luggage.

The town's landmarks are useful anchors when giving directions or planning a trip. These include the central market square, the Chibuluma mine area, the surrounding miombo woodland, and riverside recreation spots along the watercourses that give the town its name. Most practical journeys involve moving between these points or heading out along the M18 toward Kitwe.

Rail

Kalulushi does not have its own passenger rail station. The nearest rail station is in Kitwe, roughly 14 km to the east. If rail travel is part of your plans, treat Kitwe as your access point and arrange road transport to get there from Kalulushi.

Buses and Minibuses

Buses and minibuses are the main form of shared public transport in and around Kalulushi. The town connects by road with Kitwe, Chingola and Ndola, so minibus and bus services along these routes are the practical way to travel between Copperbelt towns without a car.

Minibus hire is also available in Kalulushi, which is useful for groups, for trips with a lot of luggage, or for reaching destinations that are not on a regular route. If you are hiring a vehicle with a driver, agree the fare and the itinerary in advance.

As a rule, buy your seat on the vehicle rather than expecting a printed ticket or a travel pass system — fares are typically paid directly for the journey you are making. Confirm the fare and the destination with the conductor or driver before you board, and keep small notes and coins handy.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are available in Kalulushi and are the simplest option for point-to-point trips, especially if you are unfamiliar with the minibus routes or travelling outside daylight hours. For longer journeys — to Kitwe, Chingola, Ndola, or the airport — a taxi or a hired car with a driver is the most comfortable choice.

Ride-hailing apps are not something you should count on in a town of this size. Plan on arranging taxis directly, through your accommodation, or by hiring a car and driver, and agree the price before you set off.

Walkability

Kalulushi's origins as a compact, planned company town make the central area reasonably walkable for short errands — reaching the market square, nearby shops, or local institutions on foot is realistic. Beyond the centre, the town spreads out toward the mine areas and into surrounding woodland, and roads are shared with vehicles, so walking long distances is less practical.

If you do walk, stick to the built-up parts of town, be mindful of traffic on the main roads, and arrange a lift for longer trips or after dark.

Getting There from the Airport

The nearest major gateway for Kalulushi is Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport (NLA). From the airport, the practical way into Kalulushi is by road — a taxi or a pre-arranged car and driver. Because the airport serves the wider Copperbelt rather than Kalulushi alone, it is worth arranging your transfer in advance through your accommodation or a local transport provider, particularly if you are arriving late in the day.

If you would rather use shared transport, you can travel by road toward Kitwe and then continue to Kalulushi by minibus or taxi, since Kitwe is the nearest hub and the town sits just off the M18 west of it.
