Getting Around Mbombela

Mbombela, the capital of Mpumalanga and the main gateway to Kruger National Park, is a car-oriented city. Amenities, cafés, shops and co-working spaces are scattered away from residential areas, so most visitors find that having access to a vehicle makes daily life far easier. Public transport within the city is limited and not always convenient for tourists, and local commuting is not well supported. The practical options are set out below.

By Car

Driving is the most practical way to get around Mbombela. The city sits on the N4 highway corridor, the main arterial route of the Maputo Corridor, and the roads are paved. Car rental, taxis and private transfers are all available. Driving also lets you take in the surrounding scenery and meandering mountain passes; the area is still quite wild, and you may spot small game, vervet monkeys and baboons while driving at your leisure.

If you arrive by car from Gauteng, take the N4 from Pretoria and keep cash at hand for the toll gates. The N4 is a toll route managed by Trans African Concessions (TRAC): traffic heading east towards Maputo passes through the Nkomazi Toll Plaza, while traffic heading west towards eMalahleni passes through the Machado Toll Plaza. The old road through the city centre, Samora Machel Drive, was redesignated as the R104 route when the N4 Northern Bypass opened. Other roads in the area include the R40, which connects to Barberton and White River, and the R37, which connects to Mashishing in the north-west.

Rail

Mbombela railway station, on the corner of Andrew Street and Henshall Street, lies on the Pretoria–Maputo railway. Shosholoza Meyl operates regular trains west to Johannesburg via Middelburg, Witbank and Pretoria, and east to Komatipoort on the border with Mozambique. From Komatipoort you can take a Mozambican train east to Maputo. Note that some transport guides report no railway station in Mbombela accepting regular passenger trains and no convenient rail connections in nearby settlements, so it is worth confirming current services before planning a trip by rail.

Buses and Long-Distance Coaches

Long-distance buses connect Mbombela to major cities including Johannesburg and Pretoria. Intercity services are operated by companies such as Intercape, Greyhound and City to City, and coaches generally have air conditioning, reclining seats and restrooms. City to City and Citiliner buses run to and from Pretoria and Johannesburg, and there is a daily City to City service from Mbombela to Maputo in Mozambique. Minibus taxis also run to and from Eswatini (Swaziland).

Within the city itself, public transport is underdeveloped and sparse. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) infrastructure is under development, which may improve things in future, but it is not yet operational.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

For travel within the city, visitors generally rely on taxis or ride-sharing services such as Uber, which operate in Mbombela. These can be costly, and longer trips should be arranged in advance. Minibus taxis are the mainstay of local commuting for residents and also serve cross-border routes to Eswatini.

Walking and Cycling

Walking is feasible only for basic errands in some areas; the city lacks the infrastructure for a walkable lifestyle, so it is not a realistic way to cover the city as a visitor. Cycling is similarly impractical for everyday transport: there is no comprehensive network of bike lanes for commuting, and hilly terrain and road safety concerns add to the difficulty. Mountain trails and scenic routes in the vicinity do suit recreational biking, however.

By Helicopter

For a different perspective, Hover Dynamics Mpumalanga, based at Nelspruit Airport (Hanger No. J1-A), offers helicopter tours, rides and trips in the Mbombela and Mpumalanga area, including Kruger Park and other game reserves.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (MQP) is the main airport serving the city, located north-east of Mbombela. It receives regular flights from Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo), Cape Town and Durban, as well as flights to destinations abroad including Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. The airport is well developed, with ATMs, cafés, souvenir shops and several car rental desks, so picking up a rental car on arrival is straightforward.

Nelspruit Airport, the city's original airport, lies south-west of the city and is owned and operated by the municipality. It primarily handles general aviation aircraft, and several aircraft maintenance, firefighting, charter and training companies are based there. Skukuza Airport lies inside Kruger National Park itself for those heading straight to the park.

Because public transport within the city is limited, the most practical ways to reach Mbombela from the airport are by rental car, taxi or pre-arranged private transfer. Longer trips in particular should be arranged in advance.
