Getting around Randfontein
Randfontein is a gold mining town in the West Rand of Gauteng, west of Johannesburg, and English serves as the lingua franca for the town, which makes it relatively easy for a visitor to ask for directions and buy tickets. The town is spread over a wide municipal area, with a central business district, outlying suburbs, and a large industrial area at Aureus, so getting around generally means relying on vehicles rather than long walks between places.
Rail and the Gautrain network
Randfontein itself has no direct public transport connection to major destinations such as the Mall of Africa in Midrand; journeys require transfers. The practical rail option for a visitor is to take a taxi from Randfontein to Naledi, then a Prasa/Metrorail train from Naledi to Johannesburg, which runs roughly hourly. From there you can walk to Park station and connect to the Gautrain, which links Park station to Midrand and other destinations, with trains running frequently. The Gautrain also operates feeder buses, for example between Midrand and the Mall of Africa. Tickets for the Metrorail leg are bought from Prasa, and Gautrain train and bus fares are separate.
Buses and other public transport
There is no dedicated local bus network described for getting around Randfontein itself. The bus services that appear in the transport picture are the Gautrain feeder buses, which connect Gautrain stations to nearby destinations such as the Mall of Africa. For most local trips within Randfontein, visitors should expect to use taxis or drive rather than rely on scheduled buses.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Minibus taxis are the mainstay of local public transport. A taxi from Randfontein to Naledi takes around 35 minutes and connects with the Metrorail train to Johannesburg. Taxis can also be hired for direct trips: a direct taxi from Randfontein to the Mall of Africa takes roughly the same time as driving, about 47 minutes, though at a considerably higher cost than the train-and-taxi combination. For shorter hops around town, taxis are the most practical option for a visitor without a car.
Walkability
Randfontein is not a town that rewards walking as a primary way of getting around. The municipal area is large, and key destinations such as the industrial area at Aureus and the outlying suburbs are spread out from the centre. Walking is best reserved for moving between nearby points within the CBD or a single suburb; for anything beyond that, plan on a taxi or a car. Note also that Robinson Lake, between the Randfontein Golf Course and Robin Park, has been declared a radioactive area and is closed off to the public, so it should not be treated as a walking destination.
Getting from the airport into Randfontein
The reference material does not describe a direct airport transfer into Randfontein. The practical route for a visitor arriving by air is to make your way to the Gautrain network and connect westward: Gautrain services link the Johannesburg area, including Park station and Midrand, and from Park station you can take the Metrorail train to Naledi, then a taxi onward to Randfontein. Because there is no direct public transport link into Randfontein, allow time for the transfers, and consider a direct taxi or hired car from the airport if you are carrying luggage or arriving late.
