Pretoria offers several transport options for visitors, though each has distinct characteristics. Common sense is important when moving around the city—be aware of your surroundings, especially after dark, and avoid traveling alone in certain areas. Main shopping centres are generally safe to visit.
Rail and Metro Services
The Gautrain is a convenient high-speed rail link connecting Johannesburg, O.R. Tambo International Airport, and Pretoria. You can access this service directly from the arrivals hall at the airport. The fare from the airport to Pretoria is R164. Safe, comfortable Gautrain buses also serve local routes from different stops within Pretoria.
Metrorail operates frequent commuter train services from Johannesburg to Pretoria, with fares starting at R16.50 one way. Metrorail also services outlying towns and many suburbs of Pretoria. The main railway station is located at the corner of Thabo Sehume Street and Railway Street, just south of the city centre. Note that as of 2025, there are no long-distance trains operating from and to Pretoria, though some regional services from towns like Musina and Komatipoort do call at the station.
Buses and Rapid Transit
The A Re Yeng rapid bus system operates within Pretoria as the municipal bus service. Fares are R8 for journeys within the central business district and R16 for longer distances. While coverage is not extensive and service is not as frequent outside rush hours, the system is reasonably reliable. The main office is located at Church Square, where timetables are available. Bus stops have poor directional signage, so asking locals or waiting to confirm the route is advisable. Service frequency is best during peak commuting times.
Minibus Taxis
Pretoria has an extensive network of informal minibus taxis that are cheap and used primarily by local commuters. The minibus taxi system has improved significantly over time; these vehicles are now relatively luxurious and not overcrowded except during peak hours. Accidents are rare. Uber is available in Pretoria, though with some limitations. There is a restricted zone surrounding the Gautrain station where pickups and drop-offs are not permitted. Note that most national routes are toll roads, with open-road tolling (e-toll) available on freeways around Johannesburg and Pretoria.
Walking
Walking is a viable option during daylight hours, particularly in main shopping centres and well-trafficked areas. However, walking may be unsafe after dusk in certain areas, including central Pretoria, so it is best avoided as a transport method in the evening.
Getting from the Airport to Pretoria
O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg is the closest international airport to Pretoria. The Albertina Sisulu Highway (R21) connects the airport to Pretoria.
The Gautrain is the most straightforward option. You can access it directly from the airport's arrivals hall, and the journey is safe and comfortable. The fare is R164 to Pretoria.
Airport shuttles are also available for booking or hire at the airport terminal. Companies offering shuttle services include the JIATA Taxi Association and Ants Events and Tours, both of which can be contacted to arrange transport to your Pretoria destination.
