Getting Around Welkom

Welkom, known as Circle City for its distinctive traffic-circle street design, is a compact city in the Free State, and getting around it is straightforward once you understand that private vehicles and minibus taxis do most of the work. There is no metro, tram, or commuter rail network to rely on, so plan your movements around road transport.

By Minibus Taxi

Minibus taxis are the primary form of mass transit in Welkom. They are privately owned and operated, follow fixed routes, and run without set timetables. Fares are paid in cash to the driver or conductor and are charged by route segment.

Ride-Hailing and Metered Taxis

Bolt is widely used in Welkom, while Uber has limited availability. Ride-hailing apps offer in-app payment with a cash option, GPS tracking, registered drivers, and driver and car verification through the app. Bolt is also available from the Welkom bus terminal.

Traditional metered taxis are less common. If you use one, call a reputable company and check for official markings before getting in.

Car Rental and Driving

Renting a car is the most independent way to explore Welkom and the wider Free State. Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, and Thrifty all operate in the city. Requirements typically include a minimum age of 21–23, a valid driver's licence, and a credit card for the deposit; an International Driving Permit is recommended.

Walking and Cycling

Welkom's CBD is walkable during the daytime, as are Ernest Oppenheimer Park and some residential areas. There is no formal public bicycle system and little dedicated cycling infrastructure, so cyclists should wear a helmet and reflective gear.

Formal guided walking tours are not typically advertised, but self-guided exploration is possible in well-lit areas during daylight. Avoid walking or cycling alone at night anywhere, and take extra care in townships and industrial areas.

Getting In from the Airport

Welkom is served by a small airport, and there are no scheduled flights. For practical purposes, most visitors arrive via the larger airports and continue by road. Private shuttles are available from Johannesburg's O.R. Tambo (JNB) and Bloemfontein's Bram Fischer (BFN) airports, and Bolt can be booked from the Welkom bus terminal once you are in the city.

Practical Summary

There is no specialised transport such as boat taxis or cable cars in Welkom. The main ways to get around are minibus taxis, ride-hailing (chiefly Bolt), and car rental, with walking practical in the CBD and parks during daylight. Note that Welkom's central business district is designed around traffic circles, with a minimum of stop streets and no traffic lights or parking meters in the CBD — a layout that makes driving through the centre relatively smooth.
