Getting around Vinh Long
Vinh Long is a Mekong Delta city and the capital of the province of the same name, sitting within reach of other Delta hubs such as My Tho and Can Tho. For visitors, getting around is mostly a matter of short hops within the town centre, plus a few useful connections to the surrounding area and onward to larger cities.
On foot and by ferry
The town centre is compact enough that many of the places a visitor wants to reach are within walking distance of one another. One genuinely local experience is the short ferry crossing to An Binh, which is cheap and frequent: it departs every 15–20 minutes, and the fare is nominal for a foot passenger and only slightly more if you bring a motorbike aboard. This is the simplest way to get out onto the island side of the river without arranging private transport.
Rail, metro and tram
There is no rail, metro or tram network serving Vinh Long. Visitors should not plan on trains or urban rail for getting around the city or arriving from elsewhere; the practical options are road-based transport and boats.
Buses and public transport
Vinh Long is connected by long-distance bus to a range of destinations, including Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, My Tho, Long Xuyen, Sa Dec, Rach Gia and other Mekong Delta towns. Journey times and fares vary by route and operator, and fares change over time, so it is worth confirming the current price when you buy your ticket.
One thing to plan around is that Vinh Long has a confusing setup of three bus terminals:
- The old bus terminal in the town centre, which handles buses to and from Can Tho, occasionally to and from Ho Chi Minh City, and some regional destinations.
- The central Vinh Long bus terminal, located south of the town centre, which is served by Phuong Trang/Futa Bus.
- The inter-province (Hoang Long) terminal, which in practice is just a bus stop at a roundabout west of town.
Because these are in different places, check which terminal your bus uses before you set off, and allow extra time if you are connecting between them. Tickets are generally bought at the terminal or directly from the operator rather than through a citywide pass system.
Taxis and ride-hailing
In practice, for short trips within town, the ferry, walking and arranging transport through your accommodation are the options the available information supports.
Boats
Scheduled boat services no longer run, but tourist boats are still an option. It is possible to book a tourist boat to Chau Doc that includes a night on the Mekong, and from there a bus transfer onward to Phnom Penh can be arranged for an additional fee. This is a good choice if you want to combine transport with a Mekong experience rather than simply getting from A to B.
Getting into the city from the airport
The reference material does not identify an airport serving Vinh Long or describe any airport transfer arrangements. Visitors should therefore treat arrival logistics as something to confirm in advance with their airline, accommodation or bus operator, rather than assuming a dedicated airport bus or train link exists.
