Orientation: Where Go Vap Sits
Go Vap was a former urban district of Ho Chi Minh City that ceased to exist on 1 July 2025. It lay in the north and northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, bordering Binh Thanh to the east, Tan Binh to the west (largely along the Tan Son Nhat Airport wall), Phu Nhuan to the south, and District 12 to the north and northwest along the Tham Luong – Ben Cat River. That position mattered for a visitor: the district acted as a gateway between the city center and provinces such as Binh Duong, Dong Nai and Tay Ninh, and it had direct access to both Tan Son Nhat International Airport and the North–South railway. In practice, this meant Go Vap was easy to reach from the airport and reasonably well connected onward, but it was not the downtown sightseeing core.
How Tourists Move Around the City
Ho Chi Minh City traffic is dominated by motorbikes, and visitors typically get around using a mix of taxis, ride-hailing apps, and local buses, with walking best reserved for short hops within a neighborhood. For Go Vap specifically, the practical modes were buses, taxis and ride-hailing, plus walking once you are at your destination. The district was compact and urban, so most trips within it were short, but the arterial roads are busy and not always pleasant on foot.
Rail, Metro and Trams
No metro or tram network is described as serving Go Vap in the available material, so a visitor should not plan on rail-based urban transit here. Treat the railway as a connection for intercity travel, not as a way to hop between Go Vap neighborhoods.
Buses and Public Transport
Buses are the main public transport option for reaching and moving through Go Vap. Local routes passing through the district include 146, 36, 03 and 59. The Go Vap District Bus Station, at 123 Nguyen Thai Son Street, is served by lines 08, 19, 27, 93 and 104, and it has a ticket office open from 05:00 to 22:00. The station offers street parking for motorbikes and cars, an ATM, public toilets (no showers), basic ramps, and taxis at designated stands; food stalls and small restaurants are nearby. Arriving at least 30 minutes before a scheduled departure is recommended, and the station is described as well-lit with a reasonable level of security, suitable for solo travelers. There are no car rental services listed at the station.
For a sense of how buses connect Go Vap to the center: from District 1 the distance is just over 9 km, roughly 30 minutes along a route running via Le Loi Street, Cong Truong Lam Son, Hai Ba Trung Street, Kieu Bridge, Phan Dinh Phung Street, Nguyen Kiem Street, Nguyen Thai Son Street, Nguyen Oanh Street and Phan Van Tri Street. Buy tickets at the station ticket office or on board, and keep small change handy.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are available at designated stands at the Go Vap District Bus Station, and both taxis and ride-hailing apps operate across the district. Ride-hailing is a convenient option for door-to-door trips, including the electric taxi operator Green SM. For airport runs or late-night travel, a taxi or app-based car is usually the simplest choice.
Walkability
Walking works best for exploring a specific area rather than crossing the district. Several destinations are pleasant on foot once you arrive: Gia Dinh Park, on the border of Go Vap and Phu Nhuan, has large old trees, lawns and a children's playground; Go Vap Cultural Park offers a lotus pond, flower-lined paths and wooded areas; and Hoa Binh Water Music Square has green walkways along with its water music shows and weekend events. Markets such as Hanh Thong Tay, open day and night, are best explored on foot. Between these spots, however, the roads are busy, so plan to use a bus, taxi or ride-hailing app for longer links.
Getting from the Airport into the City
Tan Son Nhat International Airport sits right against Go Vap's western edge, along the boundary with Tan Binh District, making the district one of the closest parts of the city to the airport. From the airport you could reach Go Vap by taxi or ride-hailing app, or by local bus, since Go Vap had direct access to the airport and bus routes serve the district. If you are heading onward into central Ho Chi Minh City, the same options apply: taxi or ride-hailing for a direct trip, or a bus toward District 1, which takes roughly 30 minutes by the route described above. The Go Vap District Bus Station, with its ticket office and taxi stands, is a useful starting point if you prefer to begin your journey by bus.
