Getting Around Quảng Ngãi
Quảng Ngãi is a small city, but many of its attractions sit out on the outskirts rather than in the centre. The nearest beach, My Khe, is some distance away, so a motor vehicle is genuinely useful if you want to see more than the city itself. The practical upshot for a visitor is that you should plan on mixing taxis, ride-hailing, and local buses rather than expecting to cover everything on foot.
Rail
Quảng Ngãi sits on the TransViet Railway line, which runs through the city alongside National Highway 1, and the main stop for visitors is Quảng Ngãi Railway Station (Ga Quảng Ngãi) on Nguyễn Chánh. Beyond that principal station, there are several smaller rail stations along the line elsewhere in the province, though these are of limited use for a typical city-based visit. Because the railway follows the same north–south corridor as the highway, train travel is a sensible way to arrive from or continue on to other major stops in central and southern Vietnam.
Buses and Public Transport
Quảng Ngãi has two large bus stations, one north of the city and one to the south, and from these you can reach destinations across Vietnam. The South Station is on Lê Thành Tôn Street in Quảng Ngãi City, and the North Station is in Sơn Tịnh town in Sơn Tịnh district.
Within the city, local buses run from the main bus station. They are green, and the conductors have a good reputation for honesty. One route worth knowing is Route 3, which serves the QL24B corridor and includes the Sơn Mỹ museum — useful if you want to reach that site without a taxi. The catch is frequency: Route 3 runs only about every ninety minutes in each direction, so check timing before you commit to it. Fares are inexpensive, in the region of a few thousand to low tens of thousands of dong.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Regular taxis and motorbike taxis (xe om) are plentiful, particularly around the places tourists tend to gather. For straightforward, price-transparent trips, ride-hailing via Grab is the simplest option and works much as it does elsewhere in Vietnam. Given that many attractions lie outside the centre, taxis and ride-hailing are likely to be your default way of getting to the beach and outlying sights.
Walkability
The city itself is compact, so walking is fine for getting around the centre. It is not, however, a realistic way to reach the main outlying attractions — the closest beach is well outside town, and the wider spread of sights means you will want wheels for anything beyond the immediate urban area.
Arriving by Air
The airport serving the area is Chu Lai Airport (VCL), located in the Chu Lai Open Economic Zone to the north of Quảng Ngãi, near Tam Kỳ city. It sits some distance from the city, so plan on a road transfer — taxi or pre-arranged pickup — to cover the final leg into Quảng Ngãi rather than expecting to walk or use a local city bus from the terminal.
Other Ways In and Out
If you are arriving overland, National Highway 1 and the railway both pass through the city. National Road 24A heads from Quảng Ngãi into the highland provinces, while National Road 24B links the city with Mỹ Khê resort, Sa Kỳ Port, and the Dung Quất Economic Zone. Several provincial roads connect the highway with district centres and attractions around the province. By sea, Dung Quất Port lies in the Dung Quất Economic Zone to the northeast, and Sa Kỳ Port is in Bình Châu commune, Bình Sơn district, reached via National Road 24B through Mỹ Khê resort.
