Getting Around Tam Ky

Tam Ky is a compact provincial city in Vietnam's South Central Coast, and getting around it is generally a matter of choosing between a few straightforward options: local buses, taxis, motorbike taxis, and your own two feet in the central area. There is no metro or tram network here, so visitors should plan around road transport and the national rail line that passes through town.

Rail

Tam Ky is served by Tam Ky Railway Station (Ga Tam Ky), which sits south-west of the city centre. The station is a stop on Vietnam's north-south reunification rail line, and trains running the Hanoi–Ho Chi Minh City and Ho Chi Minh City–Hanoi routes call here. That makes the train a practical way to arrive from or continue on to major cities across Vietnam. Because the station is outside the immediate centre, plan on a short taxi or motorbike-taxi ride to reach your accommodation.

Buses and Public Transport

Quang Nam province operates a network of semi-urban buses that serve Tam Ky and the surrounding areas. In practice, this network can be hard for a visitor to use: routes and timetables are difficult to work out, and drivers sometimes refuse to pick up foreigners who only want to make short trips. Stops are generally well posted, but the routes themselves are confusing and often backtrack. Buses can also crawl along in the city as drivers look to pick up more passengers.

For longer journeys, Tam Ky sits on Vietnam's North-South Highway 1, so virtually every long-distance bus travelling that corridor passes through. There are two major bus stations, one at each entrance and exit to the city, generally serving destinations in their respective directions. Note that many through-services to larger destinations do not stop at the stations at all. Locals tend to stand on the side of the road and flag down the bus they need, and doing the same is often the more reliable approach.

Two local bus routes, numbers 7 and 8, run roughly hourly to the beach at Tam Thanh.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Metered taxis and xe om (motorbike taxis) are the most predictable way to cover short distances. As a reference point for fares, the run from the train station to the beach at Tam Thanh costs roughly 100,000–150,000 dong by meter taxi and around 60,000 dong by xe om. If you want your own wheels, note that there are no official motorbike rental businesses close to the train station; you will need to look further afield.

Walking

Walking works well for getting around the central part of Tam Ky, where the city's layout is compact. For anything beyond the centre — the railway station, the highway bus stations, or the beach at Tam Thanh — you will want motorised transport, since these sit outside comfortable walking range.

Getting There from the Airport

Tam Ky has its own airport (TMK), with Vietnam Airlines offering direct flights to Hanoi and codeshare flights to Ho Chi Minh City.

Two larger airports also serve the area. Da Nang International Airport is about a one and a half hours' drive from the city, while Chu Lai International Airport is closer. A free daily shuttle bus runs between Chu Lai airport and Quang Ngai city centre. Regular car and bus services are also available for these transfers, and a local bus makes frequent runs from Da Nang to Tam Ky, possibly via Hoi An.
