Thái Nguyên is a city in northeastern Vietnam, roughly 80 km north of Hanoi, and the capital of the province of the same name. For a visitor, the practical upshot is that it sits within easy reach of the capital while being small enough to navigate without much fuss.
Getting into Thái Nguyên
The most straightforward approach is overland from Hanoi, which lies about 80 km to the south. Thái Nguyên also has its own railway station, Ga Thái Nguyên, so arriving by train is an option if you prefer the rails to the road.
Getting around the city
Within Thái Nguyên itself, the city is compact and the transport scene is informal rather than heavily institutionalised. The most visible way to cover short distances is by motorbike taxi — you should find plenty of them around, and they are the default way many visitors and locals alike hop across town.
- Motorbike taxis — widely available and the easiest way to get around for short trips. Agree on the fare before you set off.
- Walking — the city centre is small enough that walking works well for nearby errands and meals, though you may prefer a ride for longer hops.
Rail, metro and trams
Thái Nguyên has a railway station, Ga Thái Nguyên, which is the rail gateway to the city and connects it with the wider network. There is no metro or tram system in Thái Nguyên; for getting around town, you will be relying on road transport rather than rail.
Buses and public transport
Public transport within the city is limited in scope, and the practical options for a visitor are the informal ones — motorbike taxis in particular. If you are arriving from Hanoi, long-distance buses and trains are the usual ways in, but once you are in Thái Nguyên, expect to arrange your own local transport rather than depend on a dense city bus network.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Beyond motorbike taxis, conventional taxis are the other obvious choice for getting around, and ride-hailing apps work in the area as they do elsewhere in Vietnam. As always, confirm the fare or the app price before you get in, and keep small change handy.
Reaching the city from the airport
Thái Nguyên does not have its own commercial airport serving the city. The practical route for air travellers is to fly into Hanoi's airport and continue overland from there — the same 80 km journey that connects the two cities by road and rail. From Hanoi you can reach Thái Nguyên by train to Ga Thái Nguyên or by road, and then pick up a motorbike taxi or taxi for the final leg into the centre.
