Getting Around Angren
Angren is a town in Tashkent Province, and for visitors the practical picture is simple: the main way to move around is by road, using buses and taxis. Public transport in Angren is part of Uzbekistan's ATTO card payment system, which makes paying for buses straightforward once you have a card.
Public Transport and the ATTO Card
ATTO is a transport card payment system used on public transport in Uzbekistan, and Angren is one of the cities where it operates. If you plan to use buses in Angren, an ATTO card is the key thing to sort out early.
- Where it works: ATTO cards are accepted on buses in Angren and in a number of other Uzbek cities, including Tashkent, where they also work at metro station turnstiles.
- Paying on the bus: Hold your card near the stationary validator mounted on the handrail, or near the mobile validator held by the conductor. The operator advises against handing your card to the conductor, because of the risk of cards being mixed up.
- Topping up: Cards can be topped up through mobile payment applications and bank services.
- Discounts: A discount transport card gives a 50% discount for students, pensioners, and disabled individuals on special fare plans. These cards are linked to your personal data and an eligibility document such as a school certificate, student ID, or disability or pensioner ID. Student cards are green, university student cards are yellow, and social cards for pensioners and disabled individuals are red.
Note that the ATTO system as described covers buses and the Tashkent Metro. Angren itself is not described as having a metro or tram network, so plan on buses and road transport rather than rail-based city transit.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
For many trips around Angren, taxis are the most flexible option, particularly for reaching places that buses do not serve conveniently or for travelling with luggage. Ride-hailing apps are widely used across Uzbekistan and are a practical way to arrange a car without negotiating a fare on the street. Agree the fare or confirm the app price before you set off, and keep small change handy.
Walking
Walking is a reasonable way to cover short distances within the centre of Angren, but the town is spread out, so you should expect to combine walking with buses or taxis for most days out. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for uneven pavements.
Getting In from the Airport
Angren does not have its own commercial airport. The nearest major gateway is Tashkent, and the practical approach is to arrive there and then continue to Angren by road or rail. From Tashkent you can arrange a taxi or ride-hailing car for the journey, or take an intercity bus or train toward Angren. If you are continuing by public transport once you arrive, having an ATTO card already topped up will let you board local buses in Angren without hunting for a ticket.
Practical Tips
- Get an ATTO card early and keep a balance on it; cards can be topped up via mobile payment apps and bank services.
- On buses, tap the validator yourself rather than handing your card to the conductor.
- Keep small notes and coins for taxis and for any cash payments.
- Allow extra time for journeys: Angren is spread out, and combining a bus or taxi with walking is usually the fastest way to get around.
