Getting Around Urgench
Urgench is the capital of the Xorazm Region in western Uzbekistan and the main gateway for visitors heading to the UNESCO-listed old city of Khiva. It is a compact, Soviet-style city, and getting around is straightforward once you know which modes exist and how they fit together.
Public Transport: Buses, Trolleybuses and Minibus Taxis
Urban transportation in Urgench includes buses, trolleybuses, and minibus taxis (often called marshrutkas). For a visitor, these are the everyday, low-cost ways to move around the city and to reach Khiva.
- Buses: The city's bus fleet has been renewed in recent years. Private operators in the Khorezm region have purchased new buses, including Zhongtong and Yutong vehicles, and these are planned for urban routes within Urgench itself. In practice this means you can expect modern buses on city routes rather than only older stock.
- Trolleybus: Urgench has a trolleybus line that runs between Urgench and Khiva. This intercity trolleybus is unusual for Central Asia and is a distinctive, inexpensive way to travel between the two cities.
- Minibus taxis: These shared minibuses supplement the bus and trolleybus network and are a common way for locals to get around.
Fares on public transport are typically paid in cash to the driver or conductor on board. There is no need for a special pass or card for a short visit; simply board, pay, and ride.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are widely available in Urgench and are the most flexible option for door-to-door trips, especially with luggage or when heading to the airport or to Khiva. You can flag a taxi on the street or arrange one through your hotel. Ride-hailing apps are also used in Uzbekistan's cities, and a visitor with a working phone and data connection can typically book a car that way. Agree on the fare or confirm the app price before setting off, as metered fares are not universal.
Rail
Urgench has a railway station on the Türkmenabat–Beyneu railway line. This connects the city to the wider national rail network, which is useful if you are arriving from or continuing on to other parts of Uzbekistan. Note that Urgench does not have a metro or tram system; rail here means intercity trains, not urban transit.
Walkability
Urgench is a relatively compact city, and central areas are walkable for able-bodied visitors. Many of the city's landmarks and amenities are within reasonable walking distance of one another, including the monument to Muhammad al-Khwarizmi outside the Hotel Urgench. Walking is a pleasant way to see the Soviet-era architecture and the cotton motifs that decorate everything from street lights to apartment buildings. For longer trips across town, or to reach the airport or Khiva, you will want a bus, trolleybus, or taxi.
Getting from Urgench Airport into the City
Urgench Airport holds international status and can accommodate all types of passenger aircraft. It operates regular flights to destinations including Tashkent, Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Paris, Rome, and Milan, along with charter flights for tourists. Because the airport serves as the arrival point for many visitors heading to Khiva, onward transport is well established.
- Taxi: The simplest option. Taxis are available at the airport and will take you to your hotel in the city or onward to Khiva.
- Public transport: Buses and minibus taxis serve the city, and you can use them to reach the center if you prefer to avoid a taxi. Ask at your accommodation which route is closest to your hotel.
- Onward to Khiva: Many travelers arrive at Urgench airport specifically to visit Khiva, about 35 km to the southwest. The Urgench–Khiva trolleybus is a notable option, and taxis are the faster, more direct choice.
Practical Tips
- Carry small cash for buses, trolleybuses, minibus taxis, and street taxis; card payment is not the norm on public transport.
- If your goal is Khiva, you can base yourself in Urgench and use the trolleybus or a taxi for the trip; the city is the main gateway to the Itchan Kala World Heritage Site.
- For city sightseeing, walking plus the occasional taxi covers most needs; use buses and minibus taxis for longer hops.
- Confirm taxi fares in advance, whether you hail one on the street or book through an app.
