Getting Around Gresham
Gresham sits just east of Portland, Oregon, and its transport network is built around a light rail spine that runs diagonally across the city. For most visitors, the practical choice comes down to the MAX light rail, TriMet buses, and — for the final stretch or late nights — taxis and ride-hailing. Driving is also a realistic option, since the city is served by major freeways.
Light Rail: The MAX Blue Line
The MAX Light Rail's Blue Line is the backbone of transit in Gresham. It cuts diagonally across the city, which means most of Gresham is reasonably able to reach a station. The line's eastern terminus sits near downtown Gresham, so if you're staying or spending time in the city center, you're close to the start of the route.
From Gresham, the Blue Line runs directly into downtown Portland and then continues onward to Beaverton and Hillsboro on the west side. That makes it the simplest way to travel between Gresham and central Portland without worrying about traffic or parking.
Buses and Other Public Transport
TriMet operates numerous bus lines that connect Gresham to Portland and to nearby Troutdale. Buses are useful for reaching parts of the city and neighboring communities that aren't right on the rail line, and they complement the MAX network rather than replacing it.
Because the rail and bus systems are run by the same regional agency, you can plan a trip that mixes both. Tickets and passes are purchased through TriMet, and the same fare media generally covers your journey across the network — so a single ticket can carry you from a Gresham bus stop onto the MAX and into Portland.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis and ride-hailing services are an option for door-to-door trips, and they're particularly handy for late-night travel, for reaching destinations away from rail and bus lines, or when you're carrying luggage. They're also a reasonable fallback if you'd rather not navigate transfers on public transit.
Walkability
Walkability in Gresham depends heavily on where you are. The Blue Line's diagonal route through the city means that many parts of Gresham are within reach of a station, and the area around the eastern terminus near downtown Gresham is the most naturally walkable for a visitor. Outside that core, distances between destinations grow, and you'll likely want to combine walking with rail or bus.
Getting In by Car
If you're driving, the best route into Gresham depends on where you're coming from and where you're headed. Interstate 84 runs along the far north of the city. US-26 (Powell Blvd.) provides another route from Interstate 205 if you're approaching from the south. Travelers arriving from the east will typically use Interstate 84, or US-26 if coming from Central Oregon.
From the Airport
Portland International Airport (PDX) is the largest airport in Oregon and lies about 13 miles from Gresham. Rental cars are available at the airport if you prefer to drive.
By transit, the MAX light rail connects the airport to Gresham with a single transfer: take the airport's Red Line and switch to an eastbound Blue Line train at Gateway Transit Center. From there, the Blue Line continues into Gresham. This is the most straightforward car-free way to reach the city from the airport.
