Getting Around Greensboro

Greensboro is a sprawling Southern city, and how you move around depends a lot on where you're staying and what you want to see. Downtown and the nearby College Hill neighborhood are compact and pleasant on foot, but many of the city's attractions are spread out, so you'll likely combine walking with buses, ride-hailing, or a rental car.

Rail Service

Greensboro is served by Amtrak, with trains connecting the city to Charlotte, Washington, D.C., and New York City, as well as a long-distance service running between New Orleans and New York. The station is downtown on East Washington Street. Officially named the J. Douglas Gaylon Depot but known locally as "The Depot," it doubles as the city's main bus station and offers restrooms, Wi-Fi, and a small cafe. There is no local metro or tram network in Greensboro, so trains are useful for arriving in or leaving the city rather than for getting around within it.

Buses and Public Transport

Local public bus service is provided by the Greensboro Transit Authority (GTA). Buses run frequently on weekdays, with a reduced evening schedule, and a shorter schedule on Saturdays. Fares are inexpensive, and passes are available for regular riders.

College students can ride the HEAT bus system for free by showing a valid college ID. HEAT routes serve both the college community and the general public; non-students pay the standard bus fare or use a GTA bus pass.

For travel between Greensboro and other cities in the region, PART (the Piedmont Authority for Regional Transportation) runs buses linking Greensboro with High Point, Winston-Salem, Mount Airy, Chapel Hill, Durham, Asheboro, and Lexington. These regional buses arrive at the Depot downtown. Greyhound also provides intercity bus service from several North Carolina destinations as well as long-distance routes from Washington, D.C. and New York City, all arriving at the Depot.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are available in Greensboro, including service at the airport provided by Triad Transportation. Ride-hailing is also an option: Lyft and Uber pick up and drop off passengers at Piedmont Triad International Airport outside doors #2 and #5.

Biking

A bike-sharing program, LimeBike, operates in Greensboro for those who prefer to cycle around the city.

Walking

Downtown Greensboro and the adjacent College Hill neighborhood are very pleasantly walkable, making them good bases for exploring on foot. Outside these areas, the city is more spread out and walking becomes less practical.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO), known locally as PTI, is the main airport serving Greensboro. It handles flights from most major hubs on the East Coast. Several rental car companies operate at the airport, and taxis are available through Triad Transportation. Lyft and Uber pick up and drop off outside doors #2 and #5.

For public transportation from the airport, PART Shuttle 27 runs from the airport to the regional hub for a low fare, and from there you can transfer for free to PART buses serving other parts of the Triad. This is a practical option if you're heading to another city in the region or want to connect to the local bus network.
