Getting Around Vallejo

Vallejo sits on the north side of San Francisco Bay, and its layout rewards a little planning. The city is served by a mix of local and intercity buses, a ferry link across the bay, and the usual car, taxi, and ride-hailing options. Two outlying districts, Mare Island and Hiddenbrooke, are cut off from the main grid and have no bus service, so plan those trips separately.

Rail, Metro, and Tram

Vallejo itself has no local rail, metro, or tram network. The nearest rail-style connection is BART, which does not reach into the city; instead, SolTrans buses link Vallejo with the BART station at El Cerrito del Norte. Amtrak also serves the area indirectly through its Thruway Motorcoach Route 7, which runs through Vallejo with stops at Discovery Kingdom and the Denny's Restaurant on Sonoma Blvd. For practical purposes, think of Vallejo as a bus-and-ferry city rather than a rail city.

Buses and Public Transport

SolTrans is the main local operator, running buses around the central parts of Vallejo and out to neighboring cities. Its intercity routes are the practical way in and out: the Red line connects El Cerrito Del Norte BART and Fairfield, the Yellow line serves Benicia and Contra Costa County, and Route 82 runs from San Francisco. Fares are modest, with reduced rates available and youth 18 and under riding free; Clipper card users and riders from outside the county pay a higher rate on the Red and Yellow lines. SolTrans has an office at 311 Sacramento St and a phone line at +1 707-648-4666, and its website carries current routes and schedules.

Two other bus services are useful for visitors. VINE Transit runs two routes into Vallejo from Napa: Route 11, the general service, and Route 11X, a more direct express that runs less often. Fares are low, with discounts for youth, seniors, and disabled riders, and free transfers to and from SolTrans are accepted if you ask your driver for one. The Airporter (Evans Transportation) is a higher-end bus service connecting SFO and OAK airports, Napa, and the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Vallejo; call +1 707-255-1559 or email info@californiawinetours.com for details.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

The source material does not describe a local taxi or ride-hailing market in detail. In practice, visitors should expect to arrange rides by phone or app, and to confirm availability in advance for trips to isolated areas such as Mare Island and Hiddenbrooke, which lack bus service. Car rental is a reliable fallback: Enterprise, Hertz, and Avis all have locations in Vallejo.

Walkability

Much of Vallejo follows a grid, similar to San Francisco, with major roads crossing town at regular intervals. When asking for directions, it helps to give or request a cross street. Many streets are named after U.S. states running east–west and California counties running north–south. On Mare Island the grid uses numbered and lettered streets; on the mainland, numbered streets exist but are in broken order with other named roads between them. Roads in the east tend to be rural or hillside routes that do not follow the grid. Walking works well in the central grid, but the two isolated districts are not practical on foot from the main town.

Getting from the Airport

Vallejo has no airport of its own, so arrivals come through the Bay Area's larger airports. The most direct option described is The Airporter (Evans Transportation), which serves SFO and OAK airports as well as Napa, with a stop at the Marriott Courtyard Hotel in Vallejo. If you prefer public transit, SolTrans Route 82 runs from San Francisco, and the Red line connects to El Cerrito Del Norte BART, which in turn links to the wider Bay Area network. By car, Interstate 80 connects San Francisco and Sacramento to Vallejo, Interstate 780 comes in from Benicia and the East Bay, State Route 29 (Sonoma Blvd.) runs south from the Napa Valley, and State Route 37 (Marine World Pkwy.) comes east from Marin and Sonoma.

Arriving by Ferry

For a scenic approach, San Francisco Bay Ferry runs an hourly service from San Francisco's Financial District, with a crossing time of just over an hour. The Vallejo Ferry Terminal is at 289 Mare Island Way, near the intersection with Georgia St. The ferry phone number is +1 707-64-FERRY.
