Getting Around Torrance

Torrance sits just south of Los Angeles International Airport, which makes it a convenient base for exploring the South Bay area. Getting around town, however, is easiest if you have access to a car or are comfortable using ride-hailing services. Public transportation exists but is not the most common way locals or visitors travel here.

Public Transit

Torrance is served by three transit agencies: LA Metro, Torrance Transit, and GTrans. All three are integrated with the TAP card payment system, which means you can use a single TAP card across the different operators rather than buying separate tickets for each agency. For route planning and maps covering the South Bay and Gateway Cities area, metro.net is the place to look.

Torrance Transit operates local bus service within the city, including a route that connects to Los Angeles International Airport. LA Metro and GTrans extend the network to surrounding communities in the region.

That said, public transportation is uncommon in Torrance. Buses run, but they are not the primary way most people get around, so you should plan on longer travel times and less frequent service than you might expect in a denser city.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

For most visitors, ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft are a better way to travel around Torrance than public transit. They offer door-to-door convenience and avoid the waiting and transfers that come with the bus network. Car rental is another practical option, especially if you plan to explore beyond the city.

Walkability

Torrance is a spread-out, car-oriented city. While specific areas such as the Del Amo Fashion Center and surrounding commercial districts can be walked once you are there, walking is not a practical way to cover the city as a whole. Plan to combine walking with a car, ride-hailing, or transit for longer trips.

Getting There from the Airport

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is just a couple of miles north of Torrance, making it the natural arrival point for most visitors. By car, take Interstate 405 (the San Diego Freeway) south, exit at 42A, and head south on State Route 107 (Hawthorne Boulevard). As you travel south on Hawthorne Boulevard, the Del Amo Fashion Center will be on your left.

If you prefer public transit from the airport, Torrance Transit's Line 8 offers service from LAX into Torrance.

Torrance is also reachable from several other exits off the 405, including Redondo Beach Boulevard, Artesia Boulevard, Crenshaw Boulevard, and Western Boulevard. From the 110 freeway south of the 405, heading west on Torrance Boulevard, Carson Street, 223rd Street, Sepulveda Boulevard, or Pacific Coast Highway will also bring you into Torrance.

If you happen to be arriving by private aircraft, Zamperini Field (Torrance Municipal Airport) at 3301 Airport Drive is a public airport open to private aircraft only — there are no commercial flights. You can call ahead at +1 310 784-7900 to schedule a landing and arrange a hangar or other dock.
