Getting Around Mbarara

Mbarara is the main commercial centre for much of south-western Uganda and an important transport hub, sitting on the road west of Masaka toward Kabale and near Lake Mburo National Park. For a visitor, that means the city is well connected to the wider region, and getting around locally is mostly a matter of motorcycles, shared minibuses, and hired cars rather than scheduled urban transit.

Rail, Metro and Tram

Mbarara has no rail, metro, or tram network. There is no urban train service to plan around, so visitors should expect to move by road for every trip, whether within the city or to surrounding towns.

Buses and Long-Distance Coaches

Buses are the main option for arriving in or leaving Mbarara, and they operate from the bus park. Several operators run services to Kampala, and there are also coaches heading south toward Kabale. Fares are paid in Ugandan shillings, and you can generally expect to buy your ticket from the operator at the bus park rather than through an online booking system.

Because departures and fares change, it is worth confirming times and prices directly with the operator when you arrive at the bus park.

Minibuses and Shared Taxis

Minibuses, locally called taxis, are the workhorse of regional travel. They typically carry around fourteen passengers and connect Mbarara with towns such as Kasese, Kabale, Ntungamo, Masaka, and Kampala. They leave when full rather than on a fixed timetable, so build in some flexibility if you are connecting to a longer journey.

Taxis, Boda-Bodas and Hired Cars

For short trips within the city, motorcycle taxis known as boda-bodas are the most common way to get around. They can take you to different parts of Mbarara, and fares are negotiated with the rider. Small cars, known locally as special cars, can be hired by an individual or a group and driven to almost any part of the country on terms agreed with the driver. This is a practical choice if you want door-to-door service, are travelling with luggage, or are heading somewhere outside the city.

Walking

Walking works well for short distances in the central commercial area, where shops, arcades, and services are clustered. Beyond the centre, the city spreads across its divisions, so most visitors rely on boda-bodas or hired cars for anything longer. As with any city, keep to busy, well-lit streets and take normal precautions with your belongings.

Getting In from Mbarara Airport

Mbarara Airport is a public airport located northwest of town along the Mbarara–Ibanda highway. There is no rail or metro link to the city, so the practical options are a boda-boda or a hired car or taxi. Arrange your transfer in advance where possible, or agree the fare clearly before departing the airport, since there is no fixed-fare urban transit serving the terminal.
