Getting Around Gulu
Gulu is the commercial and administrative centre of Gulu District and the main transport hub for northern Uganda, linking Kampala with the Acholi sub-region, Kitgum, the South Sudan corridor, Lira and eastern Uganda, Arua and Pakwach, and access to Murchison Falls. For a visitor, that means the city is well connected to the rest of the country by road and air, but getting around within Gulu itself relies on a small, simple set of options: boda-bodas, taxis and special-hire cars, hotel or project drivers, and your own two feet in the centre.
Rail, Metro and Tram
Gulu has a station on the metre gauge railway that connects Tororo and Pakwach, and the line has historically been out of service. It exists today as a logistics and rehabilitation corridor under the Uganda Railways Corporation, and there is no normal passenger service. Do not plan to travel to or from Gulu by train unless a published timetable appears. There is no metro or tram network in the city.
Buses and Long-Distance Road Transport
Road is the practical way in and out of Gulu. There is a good road connection to Kampala, and buses run from Gulu to many other destinations. Long-distance buses from the capital typically depart from Namayiba Bus Terminal, Qualicel Bus Park, or individual operator offices in Kampala, and arrive in Gulu at either Gulu Main Bus Park, the primary central arrival and departure point, or Layibi Bus Terminal, which serves some buses and routes. Arrival and departure points can differ by operator, so confirm both ends before you travel.
Onward regional routes from Gulu include Kitgum, Pader, Lira, Arua, Pakwach, Murchison Falls, Amuru, Nwoya, and the Elegu/Nimule border. Shared vehicles and buses suit common direct routes with normal luggage; a private driver is the better choice for lodges, field sites, multiple stops, same-day returns, project equipment, or park, ferry and border connections. Ask about road conditions and vehicle suitability for gravel routes such as Nwoya and Amuru after rain.
When buying a bus ticket, record the operator name, the exact boarding and drop-off points at both ends, departure and reporting times, whether the service is direct or runs via places like Lira or Karuma, the luggage and parcel rules, the expected arrival time, and a contact number. Avoid late departures from Kampala so you do not arrive after dark, and arrange your final transfer in advance.
Taxis, Ride-Hailing and Local Transport
Within Gulu, the main modes are boda-boda (motorcycle taxi), taxi or special-hire car, a hotel or project driver, and walking in the central areas. Boda-bodas are best for short daytime trips and light luggage; agree the fare before you set off, and expect to pay more at night or in rain. A special-hire car costs more but is the better option with luggage or after dark.
Gulu is less dependent on ride-hailing apps than Kampala, so do not assume Uber or Bolt will be available. The reliable approach is to arrange drivers through your hotel, your host, or a local office. For NGO, field or institutional destinations, give landmark-based directions: the institution name, the district, a nearby road, the gate, and a local phone number.
Walking
Walking works well in central Gulu, which is the most convenient base for first-time visitors because it puts you near the bus parks, banks, restaurants and transport. For anything beyond the centre, or after dark, use a boda-boda or a special-hire car rather than walking.
Arriving by Air
Gulu Airport (IATA: ULU, ICAO: HUGU) sits just a few kilometres out of town and is served by Gulu Airfield, the second biggest airport in Uganda after Entebbe International Airport, with a tarmac runway. It has aviation security, police, fire and rescue, and terminal services, but fuel, immigration and customs, and meteorology are available only on arrangement. Do not assume scheduled commercial flights: treat it as a charter and local airfield unless you hold a confirmed ticket. In the past it has been served several times a week by Eagle Air flights to and from Entebbe, with occasional charters to Moyo Town, Arua and Pakuba, and United Airlines Limited has flown to Entebbe.
For most international visitors, Entebbe International Airport is the usual gateway, with onward road travel to Gulu. If you do fly into Gulu Airfield, pre-arrange your pickup, confirm your landing time and the terminal meeting point, and expect a taxi or arranged car into central Gulu. A special-hire car is the sensible choice if you are arriving with luggage or after dark.
