Getting Around Mubende

Mubende is a town in Uganda's Central Region and the main municipal, administrative, and commercial centre of Mubende District. It sits west of Kampala along the road toward Fort Portal, and its compact town centre, central market, and nearby landmarks make it a manageable place to explore on foot and by local transport.

Rail, Metro and Tram

Mubende has no metro or tram network, and there is no rail service for visitors to use within the town. Getting around relies entirely on road-based transport.

Buses and Long-Distance Transport

Buses are the main option for reaching Mubende from other towns and for continuing onward. Services run between Mubende and Fort Portal, with departures from the Mubende bus station and arrivals at the Fort Portal station. Buses on this route are frequent, and the trip is relatively short. From Fort Portal, onward connections are available to other destinations, though some routes require a transfer there rather than offering a direct service.

For booking and schedule questions, bus operators can typically be reached by phone, email, or their website. It is worth confirming departure times locally, since frequencies vary by route and time of day.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are available in Mubende and can be used both for local trips around town and for longer journeys. For intercity travel, a taxi can be a faster option than a bus on some routes, and it may also be the cheapest for certain trips. Fares and availability are best negotiated directly with the driver or arranged through your accommodation.

Ride-hailing apps are not a dependable way to get around Mubende, so plan on using taxis, buses, or walking instead.

Walking

The town centre is compact enough that walking is a practical way to reach the central market, town council offices, and nearby services. Some points of interest sit outside the central business district, including the Nakayima Shrine, which is a short drive from the centre rather than a walk. For those outlying sites, arrange a taxi or other vehicle.

Getting from the Airport

Mubende does not have its own airport. Most visitors arrive via Kampala, which is the main gateway for the region, and continue to Mubende by road. The journey is typically made by bus or by private car or taxi. If you are coming from abroad, fly into Kampala's international airport and arrange onward road transport to Mubende from there.
