Getting Around Lutsk

Lutsk is a compact city on the Styr River in northwestern Ukraine, and its centre is small enough that many visitors cover the main sights on foot. For longer hops, the city has a convenient public transport system combining buses and trolleybuses, plus taxis, ride-hailing apps and shared kick scooters. The practical notes below cover each option.

Public Transport: Buses and Trolleybuses

Lutsk's public transport network is made up of bus routes and trolleybus routes. Both are useful for reaching the centre and connecting the main arrival points with the sights.

If you are arriving by train or bus, note that trolleybuses and numerous marshrutky shuttle between the station area and Maydan Teatralny square in the centre. The station surroundings are dominated by a large outdoor bazaar and can be confusing to navigate, so it is worth working out your onward route and carrying a map before you arrive.

Rail, Metro and Trams

Lutsk has a train station, but there is no metro and no tram network in the city. Rail is therefore relevant mainly for arriving and leaving rather than for getting around town.

For day-to-day movement within Lutsk, plan on buses, trolleybuses, taxis or walking rather than rail.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are described as the easiest way of getting around the city, and several app-based services operate in Lutsk. Popular options include Uber, Bolt, Uklon, OnTaxi, Opti and Shark. Using one of these apps is a straightforward way to arrange a ride without needing to negotiate in Ukrainian.

Walkability and Scooters

The centre of Lutsk is walkable, and walking is a practical way to reach the main landmarks, including the medieval Lubart's Castle. For shorter trips across town, shared kick scooters are available as a fun way to cut travel time; JET.UA is one of the operators.

Getting Into the City from the Airport

In practice, most visitors reach Lutsk overland, and the two main gateways into the city are the train station and the bus station.

Whichever station you arrive at, the area around the bus and train stations can be confusing, so have your onward route planned and a map in hand before you set off towards the centre.
