Getting Around Rivne

Rivne is a compact city in western Ukraine, and getting around it is straightforward. There is no metro or tram system, so visitors rely on a mix of buses, trolleybuses, taxis, ride-hailing apps, and their own two feet. The city is also a significant transport hub, with rail links to Zdolbuniv, Sarny, and Kovel, and highways connecting it with Brest, Kyiv, and Lviv.

Arriving by Air

Rivne has an international airport, but it is not currently an option for reaching the city. Ukraine's airspace is closed to civil aviation because of the Russia-Ukraine war, and there are no scheduled passenger flights. Do not plan to arrive in Rivne by air.

In practice, international visitors typically fly into Poland — Warsaw, Lublin, Kraków, Przemyśl, Chełm, or Rzeszów — and then continue overland into Ukraine by train or bus. If you are coming from abroad, plan your onward journey from a Polish airport rather than from Rivne's own airport.

Arriving by Train

Rivne's railway station (Залізничний вокзал Рівне) sits on Maidan Pryvokzalnyi and is served by Ukrainian Railways. Long-distance routes include Kyiv–Kovel, Dnipro–Kovel, Kharkiv–Chełm, Zaporizhzhia–Kovel, and Lviv–Rivne, with Odesa and Kovel-linked trains running depending on the date. Chełm-linked trains and Lviv connections pair well with Polish rail for border crossings.

For longer domestic trips — to Kyiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, or Odesa — the train is generally preferred over the bus, and sleeper trains can save you a night in a hotel. Buy tickets through Ukrainian Railways, searching for the station name "Rivne / Рівне". Be prepared for possible disruption from air alerts, infrastructure incidents, or blackouts.

There is also a separate railway ticket office on Vul. Kikvidze, useful if you want to buy in person rather than online.

Arriving by Bus

Rivne's main bus terminal is at Vul. Kyivska, 40, on the eastern side of the city. It handles domestic routes to Kyiv, Lviv, Lutsk, Ternopil, Zhytomyr, Kovel, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, and smaller towns in the oblast, as well as international services. FlixBus lists Rivne at Kyivska St. 40 on its Warsaw–Rivne route, and other operators serve Warsaw, Lublin, Wrocław, Kraków, Prague, and German cities.

Two other bus stations serve the city: Chayka Bus Station on Vul. Haharina, and Zaliznychna Bus Station on Vul. Kikvidze near the train station, which is used only for destinations within Rivne Oblast.

Note that the main bus terminal and the railway station are in different parts of the city. If you need to transfer between them, take a taxi rather than trying to walk with luggage.

Buses and Trolleybuses

Rivne's public transport system is convenient and consists of buses, trolleybuses, and minibuses (marshrutkas). Trolleybuses have run in the city since 1969. Fares are paid per ride, and the price depends on the mode and how you pay. Trolleybus fares are lowest if you use a transport card, a little higher with a bank card or mobile wallet, and highest in cash; buses and minibuses cost more than trolleybuses. Student and school discounts are available. Proposed fare increases have been discussed, so treat any specific price as subject to change.

Carry small cash, since card acceptance and network stability can vary. Schedules are published on the official city website and on rozklad.in.ua (in Ukrainian). You can also check public transport information on DozoR (in Ukrainian), EasyWay, and Google Maps.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxi is the easiest way to get around Rivne, and it is the recommended option for your first transfer from the railway station or the Kyivska Street bus terminal unless your hotel is very close and your luggage is light. Ride-hailing apps operating in the city include Bolt, Uklon, Uber, Opti, and OnTaxi, alongside local dispatch services and companies such as Shark. It is worth comparing apps on price and wait time, and availability can change during curfew or air alerts.

Scooters

Kick scooters are available in the city through operators such as JET.UA, and they are a fun way to shorten a trip around town.

Walking

Rivne's centre is compact enough that walking works well for short hops, especially if you are staying near the middle of town. For longer crossings, or when you are carrying luggage between the rail station and the bus terminal, a taxi is the more practical choice.
