Getting Around Kropyvnytskyi
Kropyvnytskyi is a mid-sized city in central Ukraine on the Inhul River, and its compact, walkable centre makes it easy for a visitor to get oriented on foot. For longer hops across town, the city has a convenient public transport system of buses, trolleybuses and marshrutkas (minibuses), plus plentiful taxis and ride-hailing. Note that Ukraine's airspace is currently closed to civil aviation because of the Russia–Ukraine war, so you cannot fly in — most visitors arrive by train, bus or car.
Public Transport: Buses, Trolleybuses and Marshrutkas
Kropyvnytskyi's public transport network is made up of three complementary modes: conventional buses, trolleybuses (electric buses running on overhead wires), and marshrutkas, the fixed-route minibuses common throughout Ukraine. Together they cover the city well and are the cheapest way to move around.
- Buses — the standard city bus routes, useful for reaching most parts of town.
- Trolleybuses — electric routes on the main corridors; slightly cheaper than buses.
- Marshrutkas — minibuses that run on their own routes; they cost a little more per ride but often run frequently and can be quicker on some trips.
Tickets and fares: you pay a single flat fare per ride, and the fare differs by mode — buses, trolleybuses and marshrutkas each have their own price, with trolleybuses the cheapest and marshrutkas the most expensive. Pay the driver on boarding (cash is the norm).
Planning your trip: schedules and route information are published in Ukrainian. The most reliable places to check are the official Telegram channel for the transport system, an online route map, and the site rozklad.in.ua. You can also look up routes and live information on EasyWay and Google Maps.
Rail: The Train Station
Kropyvnytskyi's train station (Zaliznychnyi vokzal Kropyvnytskyi) is the city's rail gateway and sits on the Znamyanka–Pomoshnaya line. It is the arrival point for domestic services from cities including Odesa, Dnipro and Kharkiv, and some international trains — to Chișinău, Prague and Trier — pass through as well (check current schedules, as these services can change). If you're coming from elsewhere in Ukraine, the train is often the most comfortable option. There is no metro in Kropyvnytskyi, and the city has no tram network; rail here means intercity trains, not urban transit.
Buses and Coaches: Intercity Connections
For regional and international travel, Kropyvnytskyi has three bus stations, so check which one your service uses before you set out:
- Bus station No. 1 — Alexandriyskoye shosse 1; tel. +380 52 2247973
- Bus station No. 2 — Telnova vulytsia 1; tel. +380 52 2232079
- Bus station No. 3 — Preobrazhenskaya ulitsa 3a; tel. +380 52 2321932
There are lots of buses from other Ukrainian cities, and international coaches run to Chișinău (two daily). Tickets can easily be bought online through a dedicated booking website, which is the simplest way to secure a seat in advance.
By Car
Kropyvnytskyi is a motorway junction, so it's straightforward to reach by road. Two international highways pass through the city: the M-12, which links Lviv Oblast to central Ukraine (continuing as the M04 before it crosses the Dnieper), and the M-13, which runs from Kropyvnytskyi to the Moldovan border and onward toward Chișinău as part of the E584 route.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are the easiest way of getting around the city, and ride-hailing apps make them simple to book. Popular options include Uber, Bolt, Uklon, OnTaxi, Opti and Shark. Using an app is the most convenient approach for a visitor, since you can set your destination on a map and pay without needing to explain an address in Ukrainian.
Walkability
The city centre is compact and pleasant to explore on foot, and Kropyvnytskyi is known for its numerous architectural monuments, which are best seen by walking. For everyday getting around, walking works well for short trips in the centre, while buses, trolleybuses, marshrutkas or a taxi are the practical choice for longer journeys across town.
Getting In from the Airport
Kropyvnytskyi has a civilian airport, but due to the Russia–Ukraine war, Ukraine's airspace is closed to civil aviation, so there are currently no passenger flights into the city. In practice, visitors reach Kropyvnytskyi overland — by train, by intercity bus or coach, or by car. If you are planning a trip, build your itinerary around rail or road connections rather than air travel, and confirm current schedules before you go.
Practical Tips for Visitors
- Language: Russian and surzhyk are most commonly spoken, Ukrainian is universally understood, and English is less widely spoken but generally available in hotels and restaurants — useful to know when asking for directions or buying tickets.
- Paying for transport: carry small cash for buses, trolleybuses and marshrutkas; use an app for taxis.
- Checking schedules: use the official Telegram channel, the online route map, rozklad.in.ua, EasyWay or Google Maps — all in Ukrainian.
- Arriving by rail or coach: confirm which station your service uses, since the city has one main train station and three bus stations in different parts of town.
