Getting Around Khmelnytskyi

Khmelnytskyi is a city in western Ukraine on the Southern Bug, and it serves as the administrative centre of both Khmelnytskyi Oblast and Khmelnytskyi Raion. It is the second-largest city in the historical region of Podolia, after Vinnytsia, and it is also a rail junction and an important industrial and higher-education centre. For a visitor, that matters in practical terms: the city is well connected by rail, and once you are in town there is a convenient public transport system, plentiful taxis, and a compact centre that rewards walking.

Arriving by Train

Khmelnytskyi sits on a rail junction, and there are frequent trains from Kyiv. One important practical warning: Khmelnytskyi is often not the final destination of these trains but a stop along the way, so it is easy to stay on board and end up in Ternopil or Lviv by accident. The carriage attendant should announce your stop in Russian or Ukrainian, but it is a good idea to know your arrival time and set a phone alarm about half an hour beforehand.

The main railway station (Zaliznychnyi Vokzal Khmelnytskyi) is on Proskurivska Street on the east side of the city. Like many stations in the region it is rather drab, and stations of this kind can attract people of a dubious nature, especially at night, so it is best to head into the city once you arrive. Taxis wait just outside the exit. Trains from here run to Ternopil, Kyiv and Lviv. If you prefer to buy ahead, there is a separate advance ticket sales office on Podilska Street in the northwest of the city.

Arriving by Bus

Long-distance buses, including services from Kyiv, use the Central Bus Station on Vinnytske Highway. The city also has two further bus stations: Bus Station No. 2 on Shevchenka Street, and Bus Station No. 3 on Prymakova Street, which is conveniently located near the train station.

Public Transport in the City

Khmelnytskyi has a convenient public transport system made up of buses, marshrutkas (shared minibuses) and trolleybuses. Trolleybuses run on overhead wires and are the cheapest option; buses and marshrutkas cost more per ride. Tickets are bought as single rides rather than as a pass, and fares are paid in hryvnia, so keep small change or a payment app handy.

For planning, schedules are published on rozklad.in.ua (in Ukrainian). You can also check public transport information on DozoR (in Ukrainian), EasyWay and Google Maps.

There is no metro or tram system in Khmelnytskyi; the trolleybus is the only rail-free electric mode, and the city's rail connection is the intercity train station rather than an urban network.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxi is the easiest way of getting around the city, and several popular companies and apps operate here. Ride-hailing apps are widely used and are a straightforward option if you do not speak Ukrainian or Russian, since you can set your destination in the app.

Taxis also wait just outside the exit of the main train station, which is the simplest option if you arrive late and want to get into the city quickly.

Getting Around on Foot and by Scooter

Walking is a practical way to cover the central part of the city, and it is the best way to get a feel for the place. For longer hops, kick scooters are available as a fun way to shorten your travel time around the city; Bolt operates scooters here alongside its ride-hailing service.

Getting from the Airport into the City

The reference material for Khmelnytskyi does not describe an airport or an airport-to-city transfer. In practice, visitors arriving by air should expect to reach the city by road or rail rather than by a dedicated airport service, and the most reliable options are the same ones used for any other arrival: a taxi or ride-hailing car booked through one of the apps above, or a train or bus connection into Khmelnytskyi's main station or Central Bus Station. If you are planning an air arrival, confirm your onward transfer in advance rather than assuming a shuttle will be waiting.
