Getting Around Mariupol: An Overview

Mariupol is a city in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine, on the northern coast of the Sea of Azov at the mouth of the Kalmius River. It was historically a centre for trade and manufacturing and also served as a coastal resort on the Sea of Azov. A three-month siege beginning on 24 February 2022 largely destroyed the city, and the Russian military secured complete control by 20 May 2022. Travel conditions on the ground can change, so treat the guidance below as a starting point and verify current arrangements locally before you travel.

Public Transport

The city's public transport network is made up of buses, trolley-buses, trams and fixed-route taxis (marshrutkas). These modes together form the backbone of everyday movement around Mariupol, and a visitor can reasonably expect to reach most parts of the city by combining them.

For all of these modes, the practical approach is the same: identify the route that serves your origin and destination, board, and pay on board. Fares are typically low and paid in local currency; having small change or a contactless payment method ready is sensible.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxi is described as the easiest way of getting around the city. This is a good option if you are unfamiliar with the routes, are travelling with luggage, or are moving between places that are not conveniently linked by public transport.

Ride-hailing apps are a convenient alternative where available; if you use one, confirm the pickup point carefully, since street naming and entrances can be confusing in an unfamiliar district.

Walkability

Mariupol is a coastal city laid out around its centre, and walking is a realistic way to cover short trips within a district, particularly around the central area near the railway station and the main streets. For longer cross-city journeys, though, the distances are better covered by public transport or taxi. Given the extensive destruction the city suffered, expect that some routes and landmarks may look different from older maps or guides, and plan to confirm your walking route locally.

Arriving by Train

Mariupol's railway station (Залізничний вокзал "Маріуполь") is on Vulytsya Linnika, in the centre of the city, which makes it convenient for onward travel by taxi or public transport once you arrive. Long-distance trains have historically connected the city with destinations including Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, Poltava, Donetsk, Moscow, Bryansk, Voronezh and Vitebsk, with some services running via Donetsk, Dnipro, Vinnytsia and Khmelnytskyi. Suburban electric trains have also run from Yasinovataya via Donetsk. Schedules and available services can change, so check current timetables before relying on a particular train.

Arriving by Bus

Mariupol has two main bus arrival points:

From either station, you can continue into the city by taxi or by local bus and minibus. If you arrive at the main bus terminal, confirm with staff or your driver which local route serves your accommodation.

Getting from the Airport into the City

The reference material does not describe an airport transfer service for Mariupol. If you are arriving by air, the practical approach is to arrange onward travel in advance — for example, by pre-booking a taxi or asking your accommodation to organise a pickup — and to confirm with your carrier or accommodation which arrival point is currently in use, since airport and transport arrangements in the region are subject to change.
