Getting Around Cherkasy
Cherkasy sits on the right bank of the Dnieper River in central Ukraine, and its compact core makes it fairly easy to navigate. The city has a convenient public transport system, and taxis or ride-hailing apps are widely considered the simplest way to get from place to place. This guide covers the main options a visitor will use: public transport, taxis and ride-hailing, kick scooters, walking, and how to reach the city from its airport.
Public Transport: Buses and Trolleybuses
Cherkasy's public transport network is built around buses and trolleybuses. Both run on extensive route networks that cover the city, so you can generally reach the main districts and the centre without much difficulty.
- Buses — the city operates a broad network of bus routes serving destinations across Cherkasy.
- Trolleybuses — an equally extensive trolleybus network complements the buses, running on overhead electric lines.
- Tickets — single-ride tickets are purchased for each journey, with a slightly lower fare on trolleybuses than on buses. Fares are paid in Ukrainian hryvnia.
- Schedules and route planning — timetables and route information are available through the DozoR app (in Ukrainian), the EasyWay app, and Google Maps. Using one of these is the most practical way to plan a trip, since it lets you match routes and times to your destination.
There is no metro or tram system in Cherkasy — the trolleybus is the city's only rail-based-style electric surface transport, and buses fill in the rest of the network.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are described as the easiest way of getting around the city, and several ride-hailing apps operate in Cherkasy. These are a good option if you are travelling with luggage, arriving late, or heading somewhere off the main bus and trolleybus routes.
- Uber — available in the city.
- Bolt — available in the city.
- Uklon — a popular Ukrainian ride-hailing service.
- OnTaxi — local taxi service.
- Opti — local taxi service.
- Shark — local taxi service.
Using an app is generally the most straightforward approach, as it lets you set your destination, see the fare, and avoid language barriers with the driver.
Kick Scooters
Rental kick scooters are available in Cherkasy and are a fun way to shorten travel time around the city, particularly for short hops in the centre. Two operators provide them:
- JET.UA
- Bolt
These are best suited to short trips on pavements and cycle-friendly streets rather than long journeys across town.
Walkability
Cherkasy's central area is compact enough that walking is a realistic option for many trips, especially if you are staying near the middle of town. The city was laid out from the early 19th century with square blocks and straight streets, which makes the centre relatively easy to navigate on foot. The main railway station and the bus stations sit just outside the very centre, so a short walk or a quick taxi ride will usually connect you to the heart of the city.
Arriving by Air
Cherkasy has an airport, and Bus Station No. 2 (the "New Bus Station") is located near it on Smilianska Street. However, due to the Russia-Ukraine war, Ukraine's airspace is currently closed to civil aviation, so arriving by plane is not an option at present. Visitors should plan to reach Cherkasy by train, bus, or car instead.
Arriving by Train
The railway station is located about a kilometre southwest of the city centre. It offers a range of services useful to arriving travellers, including:
- Issuance of written and complex inquiries
- Luggage storage
- A mother-and-baby room
- Restrooms
- A service centre
- A cafe bar
From the station, you can continue into the centre by taxi, ride-hailing app, or local bus.
Arriving by Bus
Cherkasy has several bus stations, and long-distance services also include minitaxis. The main ones are:
- Bus Station No. 1 — on Krupskaya Street, about two kilometres southwest of the centre. It handles long-distance transport and minitaxis, with operators such as Auto Service 2005 (serving Kyiv, Bila Tserkva, Kaniv, and Chyhyryn), Auto Express (serving Dnipro, Kyiv, Poltava, Kharkiv, Vinnytsia, Kropyvnytskyi, and Kremenchuk), and Elite-Express (serving Kharkiv).
- Bus Station No. 2 (New Bus Station) — on Smilianska Street, near the airport.
- Bus Station No. 3 — on Hoholia Street, in the midtown area.
- Bus Station No. 4 — on Ilina Street, near Soborny Square.
Which station you use will depend on your origin and operator, so it is worth checking in advance. From any of them, taxis, ride-hailing, and local buses will get you to your accommodation.
Arriving by Car
Two major automobile routes pass through Cherkasy: the H16 national route (Uman–Zolotonosha) and the P10 regional route (Kaniv–Kremenchuk). The capital, Kyiv, lies roughly 200 km to the north, making Cherkasy reachable by car from the capital. Once in the city, driving is possible, but for most visitors the bus, trolleybus, taxi, and ride-hailing options will be simpler than navigating and parking a car.
Practical Summary
- Best for most trips: ride-hailing apps (Uber, Bolt, Uklon, OnTaxi, Opti, Shark) — easy and direct.
- Cheapest for regular travel: buses and trolleybuses, with single-ride tickets bought per journey.
- Plan your route: use DozoR, EasyWay, or Google Maps for schedules.
- Short hops: walk in the compact centre, or rent a JET.UA or Bolt kick scooter.
- Arriving: by train to the railway station, by bus to one of the four bus stations, or by car via the H16 or P10. Flights are not currently possible because Ukrainian airspace is closed to civil aviation.
