Getting around Kahama: an overview
Kahama is a town in Tanzania's Shinyanga Region, and it works best for visitors as a practical stopover rather than a destination with a big transport network. It sits on routes toward the Serengeti and Lake Victoria, and most travellers pass through by road or arrive via a nearby airport and a road transfer. Within town, you'll find simple, low-cost local transport rather than a formal urban transit system.
Rail, metro and trams
There is no rail, metro or tram network serving Kahama.
Buses and other public transport
Long-distance buses are the main way in and out of Kahama. Regular services connect the town with Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Arusha and other key cities. Journey times vary by origin — Dar es Salaam is a long haul of roughly eight to ten hours, while Mwanza is a few hours away by road. Fares on the Dar es Salaam route typically fall in the TZS 30,000–50,000 range (about USD 12–20), and booking ahead is recommended during peak seasons.
Within town and the surrounding area, local minibuses and shared taxis do the work. They are affordable and used mainly by residents for short trips, so they're a good budget option if you're comfortable with local-style transport.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis exist but are less widely available than in larger Tanzanian cities. You'll generally find them near the town centre and around major hotels. The practical advice is to arrange one in advance or through your accommodation or guide rather than expecting to flag one down easily.
Boda-bodas — motorcycle taxis — are common for short distances and are useful for narrow roads and places other vehicles don't reach. If you use one, insist on a helmet and choose a reputable driver.
Car hire
Several local agencies rent cars in Kahama, including vehicles with drivers. Hiring a car with a driver is a sensible choice if you want flexibility for day trips or onward travel, especially given the road conditions described below.
Walkability
For short hops around the centre, walking plus a boda-boda or shared taxi covers most needs.
Getting from the airport into town
Kahama has no major airport and no direct commercial flights. The nearest flight options are Mwanza or Shinyanga, each within a few hours' drive of town. Domestic airlines serving those airports include Precision Air and Air Tanzania. From either airport, you'll complete the journey by road — by bus, private car or a hired vehicle with driver.
Road conditions and practical tips
- Roads from Mwanza, Shinyanga and Dar es Salaam are generally fair to good, but the main highway has uneven stretches, potholes and dirt sections.
- Conditions worsen in the rainy season, so check before you travel.
- Book long-distance bus tickets in advance during peak periods.
- Arrange taxis through your hotel or guide, and use a helmet with boda-bodas.
- If you're heading onward to the Serengeti or Lake Victoria, treat Kahama as a comfortable stopover and confirm your onward transport before arriving.
