Getting Around Musoma

Musoma is a lakeside town on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria and the capital of Tanzania's Mara Region. It sits close to the Kenyan and Ugandan borders, which makes it a natural stop for travellers moving between Tanzania and its northern neighbours. The town is compact and its transport options are straightforward: most visitors get around on foot, by taxi, or by bus, and long-distance connections are made by road or air.

Walking

Musoma is a small, walkable town, and on foot is a practical way to cover the centre. The town sits in a heavily indented bay, and the name Musoma itself comes from a word meaning "a spit" or peninsula, referring to the many points of land that jut into the lake. Walking lets you take in the waterfront and the old German "Boma" building, a reminder of the town's colonial history. If you are staying slightly outside the centre, note that some accommodation and institutions sit a few kilometres away, so you may need a taxi for those trips.

Buses and Long-Distance Road Travel

Buses are the main form of public transport for reaching Musoma and for travelling onward. Champion Express is one operator serving the region, running shared buses between Mwanza and Musoma. Its services offer a single "Comfort" class, and e-tickets are available — you do not need to print them. Buses on these routes depart early in the morning, so plan to be at the terminal well before dawn if you are heading out. Onboard facilities are basic: there are no toilets and no Wi-Fi, so bring water and anything else you need for the journey.

Musoma is also connected by road to other major towns in the region:

If you are driving a Kenya-registered vehicle into Tanzania, you must complete temporary export documentation in Kenya before reaching the border, and purchase a temporary road licence for Tanzania at the border itself.

Rail, Metro and Tram

Musoma has no rail, metro or tram network, and none is in operation for visitors. A railway line linking the port of Tanga on the Indian Ocean, through Arusha and around Serengeti National Park to Musoma, has been planned as a joint venture between the governments of Tanzania and Uganda, with goods intended to be transferred at Musoma onto barges for Lake Victoria. This is a future project, not a service you can use, so plan your travel around road and air connections.

Taxis and Arrival by Public Transport

Taxis are available in Musoma and are the simplest option when you arrive by public transport and need to reach a specific destination, such as accommodation or a school outside the centre. If you arrive by bus, expect to find taxi services waiting to take you onward. Agree on your fare before setting off, as is standard practice for taxis in the region.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Musoma is served by Musoma Airport, and commercial flights operate to the town. For international or longer connections, many travellers route through Mwanza instead: Air Tanzania has frequent flights from Dar es Salaam and Kilimanjaro/Arusha to Mwanza, and Precision Air flies from Nairobi to Mwanza each weekday. From Mwanza, you can continue to Musoma by road or by bus. Once you land at Musoma Airport, taxis are the practical way into the town centre.
