Getting Around Douliu

Douliu is the county seat of Yunlin County and its political and economic centre, but it is a compact city rather than a large metropolis. That shapes how you move around: most of what a visitor wants to see sits within a fairly small area, and the practical question is usually not which line to take but whether to walk, cycle, or hop in a taxi. Public transport within the city itself is limited, so plan on combining a few modes.

On Foot

The city is small enough to be walkable in principle, and walking is a reasonable way to cover the centre. Be aware, though, that Douliu is one of the least walkable cities in Taiwan: there are virtually no sidewalks, even in the city centre. In practice this means you walk on the road itself, so stay alert for motorbikes and cars approaching from all directions. Wear something visible if you are out after dark, and cross with care rather than assuming vehicles will yield.

By Bicycle

Cycling is a good option here. Quite a few people — especially high school and university students — use bicycles around Douliu, so you will not be alone on the road, and the flat, compact layout suits short trips. It is a sensible way to reach spots slightly beyond comfortable walking range, such as the area around the National Yunlin University of Science and Technology and the parks opposite it.

Rail: Taiwan Railway and High Speed Rail

Douliu is served by two Taiwan Railway stations: Douliu Station itself and Shiliu Station. Douliu Station is the main point of arrival for the city and has frequent direct connections to Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Chiayi, Tainan and Kaohsiung. Dounan and Shiliu stations are both very near Douliu as well. Tourist information is available inside Douliu train station, which makes it a useful first stop when you arrive.

On the high-speed network, Douliu is served via Yunlin HSR station, which is located in Huwei Township rather than in Douliu itself. The station sits a bit far from everywhere, but a free bus connection runs from it to Douliu. Note that there is currently no rail connection between the HSR station and Douliu Railway Station, so you cannot simply transfer from one train to the other — the bus link is the way to bridge the gap.

There is no metro or tram network in Douliu; rail here means the conventional Taiwan Railway lines and the high-speed rail connection described above.

Buses

Local and intercity bus services in Douliu include Taisi Bus and Solar Bus. Buses are also how you connect from Yunlin HSR station into the city, via the free shuttle mentioned above.

For longer trips, intercity highway coaches run from Douliu to destinations further afield. Route 7000D, operated by Ubus, links Douliu City with Taipei City: it starts at Douliu Train Station and terminates at Taipei Bus Station, which itself offers connections to Taiwan Railway and high-speed rail services. Along the way it calls at places including Zhengxin High School, Damei, Citong Station, Xiluo, Taoyuan Chang Gung Bus Terminal, Chongyang Station, Changyuan W. St. and Cheng Yuan High School. The route runs only a few times a day in each direction, and it can be reserved in advance as an appointment bus, so book ahead if you plan to rely on it. Fares can be checked through the iBus system, and the route accepts the TPASS public transport pass.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are a straightforward option for short hops around Douliu and for reaching places where sidewalks give out entirely. For longer journeys, a taxi or ride-hailing car is the fastest door-to-door choice: driving from Taoyuan Airport to Douliu takes roughly a couple of hours by road, though the fare for that trip is high enough that most visitors will prefer the train.

Getting There from the Airport

There is no airport in Douliu. The closest airports are Taichung and Chiayi. For visitors arriving from abroad, however, the best option is to fly into Taoyuan and continue by train — under an hour of high-speed rail gets you into the region.

There is no direct train and no direct bus from Taiwan Taoyuan Airport to Douliu, so every option involves at least one transfer. The main choices:

Whichever route you choose, you will be buying separate tickets for each leg — airport line, high-speed rail or intercity bus, and Taiwan Railway — unless you are travelling on a pass such as TPASS that covers the relevant operators. The relevant carriers are Taiwan High Speed Rail, Taiwan Railway, U Bus and Solar Bus.
