Getting to Kaohsiung from the Airport
Kaohsiung International Airport (KHH) is located approximately 20 minutes south of the city center. It serves as a primary gateway for international and domestic flights. For travelers arriving at the airport, there are several ways to reach the urban core:
- Metro (MRT): The airport is situated on the Red Line of the Kaohsiung Metro system, providing a direct connection into the downtown area.
- Road Transport: The airport is also accessible via car, taxi, or scooter.
Rail and Metro Networks
The city features a multi-layered rail system that connects local neighborhoods with regional hubs. For those arriving from other parts of Taiwan, the train network offers both high-speed and standard options.
- High-Speed Rail (HSR) & Local Trains: The Zuoying Station serves as the primary hub for High-Speed Rail and regular trains. It is connected to the city center via the Red Line of the Metro, local trains, buses, or taxis. Kaohsiung Main Station is located in the heart of the city and handles regular trains traveling toward East Coast cities like Taitung and Hualien.
- Kaohsiung Metro (MRT): The system includes a Red Line running north to south (connecting the airport and Zuoying station to the city center) and an Orange Line that runs across the city from the Port of Kaohsiung in the west to Daliao in the east. These two lines intersect at Formosa Boulevard Station.
- Kaohsiung Circular Light Rail (LRT): Marked by a green line, this system operates in a loop through shopping districts and tourist hotspots. Unlike the MRT, it does not have gates; passengers tap their cards on scanners at the stations and again when exiting.
Ticketing and Payments
The Kaohsiung Metro (both MRT and LRT) accepts several forms of payment for ease of use by visitors:
- Smart Cards: iPass, EasyCard, and various QR codes from mobile apps like LINE Pay are accepted.
- Contactless Payments: Many bank cards (such as MasterCard) can be used on dedicated contactless readers. Note that some specific payment methods may offer promotional discounts during certain periods.
Buses and Other Public Transport
Buses serve as a vital link between metro stations and various neighborhoods. The city's infrastructure is designed so that feeder buses bridge gaps in the rail network, ensuring that most areas are accessible via a combination of bus and metro travel.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are a common and convenient way to navigate unfamiliar areas or reach specific destinations quickly. To ensure a smooth experience:
- Navigation: Because many drivers may not speak English, it is helpful to have the name of your destination written in Chinese characters or have a business card for the location ready.
- Cost: A cross-city trip typically costs under NT$400. It is recommended to confirm the price with the driver before starting your journey.
Walkability and Cycling
Kaohsiung offers various ways to explore on a smaller scale, from walking its streets to cycling through scenic routes.
- Walking: Many points of interest are located close together, making walking a recommended way to see the city. However, visitors should be cautious as sidewalks often double as scooter parking areas; it is safer to walk between storefronts and the parked scooters rather than in the middle of the row.
- Cycling: The city is predominantly flat, making it ideal for cycling. There are many clearly marked bicycle paths, including scenic routes along the Love River and around coastal areas like Shoushan mountain.
